Jilin University (JLU) is one of the leading national research universities under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. JLU is known for its highest enrollment and widest coverage of academic disciplines. Founded in 1946, Jilin University ranks top 10 in China, and is one of the key research-oriented comprehensive universities, strongly supported by state key projects such as “211” and “985”. Jilin University offers disciplines covering all the 13 academic categories in Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Information Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences, Medical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture.
Programs offered by JLU cover twelve disciplinary categories: philosophy, economics, law, literature, education, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and strategics. The university has now 122 undergraduate programs, 278 master’s degree programs and 191 doctorate degree programs. It has 6,588 faculty members, including 2,058 full professors. Near 69,000 fulltime students, including over 24,000 in master’s and doctoral programs, over 42,000 in undergraduate programs and over 2,000 international students in 2013.
Jilin University is located in Changchun City, central of Northeast China Plain, 1.5 hour flight to Beijing, 1.5 hour flight to Seoul and 2 hour flight to Tokyo. This area of China is well known for pure and standard Chinese Mandarin. Currently, over 2,000 international students from 98 countries are studying at Jilin University. Chinese Language, China Studies (History, Politics, Economy, etc.), International Studies, World Economy and Clinical Medicine are most popular programs. Some majors such as International Studies, China Studies, Diplomacy, World Economy, Clinic Medicine, MBA, etc. are taught in English.
JLU has started to admit international students since the early 1950’s and is one of the first groups of key higher education institutions that offer Chinese Government Scholarship to international students. To encourage outstanding students, the university has set up The Jilin University Distinguished International Student Scholarship.
Jilin University has set up collaborative relations with 199 institutions from 34 countries or areas including those in Northeast Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania. Jilin University has also set up a number of joint research centres with overseas institutions and over 600 internationally distinguished scholars from abroad are invited to teach and do research in JLU every year, some of them are Nobel Prize Laureates and academicians, leading the latest development of science and social science in the world. Great importance has always been attached to broaden students’ world horizons.
In 2013, over 1,000 students stepped out of the country for various study abroad programs. As the Northeast Base of International Education of Chinese Studies under Hanban (the Headquarters of Confucius Institutes), Jilin University is one of the major bases for Chinese Studies in China，providing training for Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. students of Chinese Studies and Chinese language teachers for Confucius Institutes in other countries. JLU is also running above programs with partners in the U.S., Ukraine and Argentina.
