🧭 Challenges & How to Mitigate

⚠️ Potential Challenges of Studying MBBS in China

While China offers high-quality, affordable medical education, international students should be aware of certain practical challenges that may impact their academic and career paths. Being informed in advance allows students to prepare proactively and make smarter decisions.

🔹 1. Licensing Exams & Practice Limitations

  • Graduates need to pass licensing exams like:

    • FMGE/NEXT (India)

    • USMLE (USA)

    • PLAB (UK)

    • AMC (Australia)

  • FMGE pass rates for China-educated students have historically been below 20–25%, due to gaps in clinical training or curriculum mismatch with local exams.

  • Licensing in China for foreign students is limited. Most Chinese hospitals require native-level Mandarin proficiency (HSK 5–6), and licenses are primarily issued to locals.

🔍 Mitigation Tip: Choose universities that provide strong clinical exposure, MOE-approved English-medium programs, and offer FMGE/USMLE coaching support.

🔹 2. Language Barrier During Clinical Rotations

  • Even if classes are in English, clinical interactions with patients during hospital training require knowledge of Mandarin Chinese.

  • Students may struggle to communicate effectively during hospital rotations without adequate language skills.

🔍 Mitigation Tip: Start learning Chinese early (many universities offer beginner courses in Year 1). Aim to achieve at least HSK Level 3–4 by the third year.

🔹 3. Internship Recognition Issues

  • Some countries do not recognize the internship done in China. Students from India, for example, may have to repeat their internship in India after clearing FMGE/NEXT.

  • Not all Chinese universities allow internships outside China.

🔍 Mitigation Tip: Confirm if the university allows the 6th-year internship to be done in your home country and whether that complies with your country’s medical council.

🔹 4. University Selection Confusion

  • Not all medical universities in China are approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to admit international students.

  • Some agents push unlisted universities with low admission fees but poor infrastructure or recognition.

🔍 Mitigation Tip: Refer to the official MOE list of 45 English-medium medical universities. Avoid institutions not listed in this database.

🔹 5. Cultural & Academic Adjustment

  • Students from non-Asian countries may face cultural shock adjusting to food, climate, or academic teaching styles.

  • Some universities enforce strict attendance, self-study hours, and classroom discipline unfamiliar to Western students.

🔍 Mitigation Tip: Choose universities with diverse international communities and peer support systems.

How to Overcome the Challenges
  • Language barrier in clinical practice → Solution: Take optional Mandarin classes, practice with patients.

  • Licensing exam preparation (NEXT/FMGE, USMLE, PLAB) → Solution: Join coaching support groups.

  • Internship recognition for Indian students → Solution: Choose an NMC-recognized university, or plan to complete internship in India.

  • Cultural adjustment → Solution: Connect with Indian associations and participate in campus activities.

History of Eligibility Criteria for MBBS in China for Indian students

In the year 2003-2004, students from India, started taking admissions in Chinese medical universities. However it was till 2007-08, that MCI had set some eligibility rules to study MBBS for Indian students, wherein a list of 45 Chinese Medical Universities were authorized by Medical Council of India. This authorization was only on the basis of Chinese Ministry of Education approval of enrolling foreign students for English-language undergraduate medical education.

The eligibility to study MBBS in China was officially put up on the MCI website from 2007-08.  Earlier To be Eligible for the program one must have to  pass 10+2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Biology. The students were also supposed to apply for an Eligibility Certificate before going to China from MCI which was a proof that the medical university is recognized. This eligibility criteria for studying MBBS was uncertain for few years, however it was mandatory for all the students to obtain the eligibility certificate.

In the years from 2008 to 2016-17, eligibility criteria to admit Indian students was changed from 50% to minimum of 60% by the Chinese medical universities. The only reason being, many of the students who were admitted to study medicine with low percentages, were not able to cope up with the medical syllabus and would not be able to complete the 5 years course. The Chinese Ministry of Education took some strict and important steps for the betterment of the international student’s education and raised the bar for the eligibility.

From 2017-18, Medical Council of India started the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for all the students who wish to study medicine after 10+2. However many of the students in different states in India were unaware of such examination and were exempted for that year to appear NEET. These students were allowed to study MBBS for that year, without qualifying NEET. In the academic year of 2018-19 NEET was mandatory for all the students who wish to study medicine abroad. However, in the month of March, 2019, MCI made a special exemption for the students who have not qualified NEET-2018 and intending to take admission in MBBS or equivalent medical course abroad, until the declaration of NEET-2019 result which was scheduled on 5th June 2019. These students needed to apply for MCI Eligibility certificate before they take admission in the universities abroad.

The eligibility for studying MBBS in China for Indian students from 2019 has been changed and since then it says, that the NEET eligibility marks will be valid for a period of three (3) years from the date of declaration of result. These students will be entitled to pursue MBBS in China including pre-medical/language course, if any followed by MBBS or equivalent medical course. This MCI eligibility rule of 2019 has been a sign of relief for lots of Indian students who are already studying in top rated university in China for MBBS and who wish to study in future.

How to pay the MBBS in China fee structure?

Many of the aspiring students and their parents who are looking to study medicine abroad or any other country abroad, easily fall prey to some of the local agents in India. It has come to our attention, that quite a few agents collect university fees from the students in India itself, which is illegal.

Every Medical University in China does authorize agencies to admit Indian students to study medicine. However no one is authorized or have any right to collect the University fees in their own company accounts or by cash in India. The parents, who wish to send their kids to study MBBS abroad, should understand that they should ONLY pay the university fees directly to the University, either by bank transfer or by cash.

There are many such medical colleges in China, who only accept the MBBS fees in their local bank accounts or by WeChat accounts or by cash in the local currencies. Most of the students who are traveling to China to study medicine are advised to carry US Dollars in cash, equivalent to their university fees, which is mentioned in their admission letter. If the fees are higher than 5000 USD, then the students can carry 1000 USD and later their bank accounts will be opened in a local bank of China. After which, their parents can send the balance fees from India, directly to the student’s bank account in China. Once the fees are arrived in student’s account, the student can pay directly to the University. In this regard, the university fees have to be paid, within 5 working days, upon the student’s arrival to the University.

Currently there have been many such cases where the local agents in India are collecting money from the parents as the University fees, yet don’t pay it to the University. Instead the student realizes this after reaching the University and then has to follow-up with his agent again. Normally the whole admission process takes around 2 months to complete and for the student to reach to China. In this tenure of 2 or add months, these agents are using the parents’ fees money for their own personal gain and then end up paying late to the University.

China MBBS Educational Institution (CMEI) strongly urges every student and parent to not give the University fees to any individual in India, but only to the concerned University. If anyone has questions about paying the University fees, you can directly call our toll free number or send us an email and we will reply you back instantly.

💬 Student Testimonials

Experience from International student in China Medical College

mbbs in china for international students
Hetal Gandhi
Qingdao University
China.

Soon after I finished my 12th class, admission in top MBBS colleges in China for international students, was the main topic in my entire family. Being from a small village in Gujarat and becoming a doctor was a biggest achievement and honour to be earned in the whole village. My parents were working in a post office in the same village and did not have much money to spend to admit me in top universities of China for MBBS.

In-fact I was doubtful if I would ever become a doctor or even pay off the MBBS fees in China, every year. In the month of April and May, just before my examination results, I managed to go to Mumbai to find out the admission procedure for the medical education in India. There I realized that now-a-days the ONLY people who can get an admission to the doctorate colleges or become a doctor are those who have money. You should have enough money to first pay off the huge donations and then pay off the academic year fees, books, hostel fees and many more. There also is a restriction for the aggregate percentage you get for your H.S.C examinations, which means a student who doesn’t have enough money or marks above 90% cannot dream of becoming a doctor.

Then I came across the site called China MBBS. I was thinking, if I don’t get admission here in India, then how would I go to study MBBS abroad? However, I got all the information and the best customer support from the China MBBS team. The China MBBS University fees which I came across was unbelievable. After going through all the information about best medical universities in China English medium, I was certain that i can achieve my dream to become a doctor and make my parents proud.

Friends, there are lot of top universities in China for MBBS, which are giving away admission to study medicine in China on scholarship to foreign students. I got my visa, my air ticket, admission fees, hostel fees and food expenses in unbelievable prices. The fees in China for Indian students is very much affordable, compared to any medical universities in India or other countries. Also most of the med school in China have been recognized and approved by the Medical Council of India and have started their course of MBBS in English medium.

I am studying in Qingdao University, which is the North Eastern part of China and is considered to be top 10 MBBS colleges in China. The duration of MBBS in China is 5 years of academic study and one year of internship. The experience of studying in China for a student like me, who has never been out of her state till the age of 17 is amazing. I have around 40 friends in my university who are from India and I hope there are more to come this year. So here is my suggestion who is looking for best medical college in China for Indian students, instead of spending lot of money in just donations in India, I would recommend you to come to China and get your admission here.

I am in the 3rd year now and studying MBBS in English in China was the best ever decision I had made in my life. Many of my friends in India ask me, MBBS in China or Russia which is better? and for me without a doubt it is China. I am giving my thoughts here in the CMEI Official site, only because the people handling this institution are trustworthy and genuine, I am the live example of that.

Thanks for this opportunity, CMEI Team and to express my opinion, you are the best consultants for MBBS in China.

How To Prepare For MCI-NMC Screening Test / FMGE, After Mbbs In China

Whether you realize it or not, your journey to prepare and appear for the MCI / NMC Screening test / FMGE already begins when you come to study medicine in China in English medium.

What is FMGE test preparation; can the test be cleared at the first attempt?

For a start, you should know it’s not rocket-science, to some; it’s a specific academic path. To others, it’s a tactical set of instructions – a “how to” manual that is not to be opened until the final year or just 3 months before, they appear for the FMGE test. But in actuality, MBBS duration in China right from 1st academic year to internship – provides you with a different set of skills and experiences that prepare you for the MCI Screening Test / FMGE test gradually.

China MBBS Educational Institution (CMEI) has introduced an online platform, FMGEOnline.com where all the Indian students in China medical colleges enrolled by us can practice the MCI papers from the last 20 years for completely free.

So every year, when the students have completed their revision, they can sit at the comfort of their hostel rooms and practice these MCI papers online, exactly as the FMGE test held in India. Because of this subtle yet continual preparation, when the time comes to appear for the FMGE, students are often more prepared than they realize. This is true for students at all levels – the ones who have planned to appear the FMGE test and practice in India as Doctors and the ones who are considering to appear USMLE or other country medical council examination and work as foreign doctors. The students can also appear for MD in China after MBBS, which have plenty of options in China.
